Seeing is an important part of driving, especially at night. No matter what vehicle you drive, if your headlights don’t work, your vehicle might as well not work either. Not only are you more likely to get into an accident, chances are you will be pulled over by a police officer. So let’s not get into all that mumbo jumbo and learn how to change our headlights in four easy steps!

Tools you will need:

  • New light bulb(s) – make sure you purchase the correct bulb for your vehicle. Your local auto store will be able to match your lights and get you the right part. *If you are changing one bulb it is a good idea to change the other.

  • Philips screwdriver

  • Wipes and a microfiber towel

1.  Locate the headlight holder

You will gain access to your headlight through your engine compartment. So, pop open the hood and get to lookin’ for that headlight holder. You are looking for the bulb holder which has a power connector – this is usually three wires that are connected or lead right to the bulb.

2. De-attach power wires

Depending on your vehicle these wires will be attached to a plug at the headlights base by a plastic catch, screw cap, or a metal clip. For a plastic catch, push down on the small lever to release. If you are working with a metal clip, pull up and away from the wires. Lastly, if your vehicle uses the screw cab, unscrew the cap counter-clockwise.

3. Remove your old bulb

The back of the headlight holder should pop right off once all of the wires have been disconnected. When you can see the bulb, remove it by holding onto the base. You may need to rotate the bulb a little in order to free it from the holder.

4. Clean and install your shiny new light

It is important to handle your new bulb with your towel or a pair of gloves. Oils from your fingers can create smudge marks on your bulb – clean your bulb with your wipes before installing. When you have successfully cleaned your bulb, stick the new bulb into the base. If this is done correctly you will no longer see the bulb’s rubber gasket. Reattach the back of your headlight and the wires as they were before.

Be sure to test your headlights before closing everything up!
