Shout out to everyone out there who stays in bed to the last possible second before you will definitely be late for work. Today it was 1 degree outside. ONE DEGREE! I DIDN’T NEED PLURALS FOR THE TEMPERATURE. When the degree is 1 it is next to impossible to get myself moving and out of bed. Today the only thing that got me out of bed was the realization that I need to defrost my window as driving with a sheet of ice blanketing your windshield doesn’t usually work out. Usually. (On the real, please DON’T DO THAT). So how do you defrost your window in a timely fashion without scratching up the glass… or shattering the glass? Pro tip, DO NOT POUR HOT WATER ON A COLD WINDSHIELD. Let’s just say that ended VERY poorly for me. So how do you do it? We’ve got some tips.

Fill up a spray bottle with two parts rubbing alcohol (70-percent isopropyl alcohol) and one part tap water. Keep it at room temperature—not in your car—between uses. I, too, was super suspicious of this system…it felt like a trap. It’s not a trap, guys, It actually works. All you have to do is spray the mixture on your windshield and the ice will start melting immediately. Let it sit for a minute, then use your scraper to wipe off the ice. Science, man. It’s crazy.

Basically, the mixture’s warm temperature causes some of the ice to thaw. Heat then transfers from that melting mess to the unbroken ice around it, which triggers even more melting. A super melt, some might say. So why not just splash regular room-temperature water on your windshield? While tepid water would melt the ice, it’ll just freeze again. The rubbing alcohol/water mixture, on the other hand, has a much lower freezing point (5 degrees Fahrenheit) than water’s 32 degrees. That means it won’t refreeze on your windshield unless the temperature outside dips close to 0 degrees, he explains.

Winter is on its way friends. I can feel it in the air… for real this time. Like, I don’t think it’s gonna go back to 80 degrees again… I hope. SO, when mother nature does decide to drop some serious weather on us make sure you’re ready. Stop by Zappone Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram of Clifton Park to get your vehicle adequately winterized today!
